Labor Force Dances was founded in October 2006 by Stephanie Blackmon Woodbeck and Kathleen Kelley after years of dancing and creating alongside each other. It was formed to bring together the efforts of two young choreographers who use different bodies and different movements to express similar sentiments. Labor Force Dances strives to view dance from a feministic approach at all times and to push the boundaries of physicality in all extremes.
Stephanie and Kathleen both received their BFA's in Performance and Choreography in 2005 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Under the tutelage of John Gamble, b.j. sullivan, and Jan Van Dyke, each developed a unique voice in choreography and performance, and together have performed and shown work extensively in New York City and North Carolina.
